Citterns

Custom Built Citterns

Gernandt Citterns are a modern adaptation of the historical stringed instruments dating back to the 1500s. These Citterns are a 10 string version of the Irish Bouzouki and have Both become a part of  the Mandolin family. The extra course of strings offers more tuning options. Many Cittern players generally use open tunings, which gives this beautiful acoustic instrument a very  full and rich tonal quality.

When constructing hand crafted Citterns, Bob is careful to select the type of woods that will best suit the tonal quality of the instrument. Gernandt’s preference is Redwood for soundboards, which produce a clear tone and a fast response. This makes Cittern a wonderful choice for a solo instrument. Western Cedar also works well, giving the cittern a warmer, more open voice.
